Anne Bissell, author of Memoirs
of a Sex Industry Survivor and the founder of Sex Industry Survivors
Anonymous, make a special appearance last week at the Rescue and Restore
Coalition Conference at the University of Toledo. The Rescue and Restore
Coalition is a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services that is committed to ending human trafficking. Bissell spoke
on: Prostitution as Sexual Abuse- The Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Connection.
Author of "Memoirs of a Sex Industry Survivor" (2004
Cleopatra International Publications), Anne Bissell claims that
the sexual abuse she endured as a child ultimately led her into
prostitution. Says Bissell, Every day, a child is exploited,
every day, we look the other way. If I did not tell the truth about
what happened in my lifetime as a result of my own experiences as
an exploited child, it would be as if I too was looking the other
way. If no one tells the truth, the exploitation will become the
norm.
At this session of the conference, Bissell discussed her book and
the link between childhood sexual exploitation, prostitution, and
post-traumatic stress disorder. "If we can all begin to speak
out, to tell the truth about all forms of sexual exploitation, we
can begin to empower each other. There is nothing glamorous about
the co-modification of human sexuality especially when more
and more, it is our children who are for sale."
