WASHINGTON DC (03/01/05) Protesters
gathered in front of the White House on Monday, marking the one year
anniversary of the coup against President Jean-Bertrand Aristide by
foreign governments. Thomas Gumbleton, a Roman Catholic Bishop asked
author and Pastor Britt Minshall to lead the protest with a prayer.
The protestors were calling for the immediate release of thousands
of political prisoners, the physical return of Aristide to Haiti and
an end to the carnage and human rights abuses that began after the
presidents forced exile.
Aristide was the legally and popularly elected president presiding
over a democratic Haiti- their first freely elected president in
200 years of independence. His supporters say he was a victim of
a coup d'état on Feb. 29, 2004. Aristide accuses the United
States, and France of kidnapping him and his wife when
they were put aboard a U.S.-chartered jet headed to Africa.
In the year following Aristides banishment, Haiti has been
politically unstable and ravaged by rampant violence. The country
may be placed under UN trusteeship for the next 25 to 40 years by
the same countries Haiti has fought to gain its independence from.
Innocent poor civilians literally eat mud to survive. Peaceful protesters
are being shot and killed by the police. The death toll has risen
to 278 sense September (2004). Thousands of Aristide supporters
have been jailed for months without a trial and some without formal
charges. Former Prime Minister Yvon Neptune is one of them. He blames
Washington for undermining Aristide with economic sanctions.
Britt recounts the events leading up to the coup against Aristide
in his new book Ring Of Angels. The author first met
Aristide in 1993 and soon became a frequent visitor to his country.
During one of his missionary visits, Britt witnessed first hand
a foiled plot and an attempt to assassinate the then president Aristide.
Undeterred, Dr Minshall continued to work on his plan for the re-engineering
of the Haitian economic model, which was under serious consideration
by Aristide. The author left Haiti narrowly escaping the country
before the coup and ensuing violence erupted.
Dr. Minshall tells the whole story and much more in his fascinating
new book Ring Of Angels. The author truncates a four
month trip to Haiti into five days of non stop action, adventure,
and drama. Other than the names being changed, Ring Of Angels
is a true accounting of Dr. Minshalls experiences. The author
will be signing books and lecturing at the Pratt Public Library
and at Books-A-Million in March (details below).
